How to Cook Oats

Whether you are a beginner at cooking oats or looking at ways others may be cooking them because you wish to experiment or refine your routine, we would love to share with you our tips on how to cook oats. At GF Oats, we believe we have mastered the art of doing so, if we do say so ourselves!

Cooking with Gloriously Free Oats is very quick and easy. We have worked with our growers at Avena Mills in Western Australia to produce a steamed and rolled oat that is soft and absorbs moisture easily. These oats are free from any gluten contamination from wheat, rye and barley. Not only will these oats taste great but they will appease everyone including those with food intolerances.

You can take your pick of any of the oats in our GF Oats range, however, we prefer to make porridge from the whole steamed rolled oats or steel cut oats. If you are cooking for children or the aged the Quick Oats is easier for the pallet.

Stovetop method:

(This is my favourite way, as I am not a big fan of microwave cooked food)

  1. Measure out a serve that suits you into a cooking pot eg. 40-60 or 1/2 to 1 cup.
  2. Add in 1 cup of water per 1/2 cup of oats and a pinch of salt.
  3. Preparing your oats the night before and leaving them to soak overnight will ensure that they are easier to digest, check out our article‚ How to soak your Oats. The rolled oat is lovely and moist as they draw up the liquid and will cook very quickly for you.
  4. Cook on a medium heat stirring periodically so the oats do not burn. If the oats start to dry out, add in some more water or your preferred milk or milk alternative.
  5. Once the oats are of a creamy consistency they are cooked.

Microwave method:

If you are short on time, but still craving oats, you might like to explore the microwave method.

  1. Follow the quantities above and add to a microwave dish.
  2. Cook for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes on high.
  3. Cooking time may vary but take the oats out and stir or add more liquid and then cook again for another minute until it is soft and creamy in consistency.
